Dance South Dance Classes
Pre-School Division
These classes are offered in two sixteen week sessions with an in-house recital at the end of each session. Please contact the studio for the latest updated schedules.
Creative Movement (ages 3-4)
Creative Movement is a one-hour combination ballet and tap
class designed for pre-school and kindergarten-age children.
Teachers combine stories and music to develop rhythm, flexibility,
coordination and space awareness. When students complete this
level of dance, they will have a strong knowledge of ballet
terms, which will help them as they begin the transition to
classical ballet training.
Pre Ballet (ages 4-5)
Pre-Ballet is a one-hour combination ballet and tap class that serves as a transition from creative movement to formal dance training. Students are still encouraged in their creativity but will begin to learn to stand and move with proper ballet technique and body alignment. Once students complete this level of dance, they will have a solid foundation of classical ballet terminology.
Performing Arts & Open Divisions
Once a student has completed the Pre-School Division at Dance
South, we then offer two tracks of instruction. We have
our Open Division, which allows any and all students
to experience dance in similar age groups. For those
interested in a more intensive dance environment, or for those
with a desire to pursue a career in dance, we run our Performing
Arts Division for which students must audition. Our
Performing Arts Division is
based on ability and technical achievement, not age, and we
require all students wear uniforms.
Beginning Ballet (ages 6-7)
Beginning Ballet is a one-hour combination ballet and tap
class that serves as an introduction to formal ballet training
with a new emphasis on barre work along with center exercises.
Students completing this level will have a working knowledge
of ballet terminology and will be adequately prepared for
Ballet 1.
Ballet
The levels of ballet build upon each other in progression. Students
continue to learn classical ballet vocabulary along with development
of proper body alignment and technique. In the upper levels of
each division, students will learn to use and write ballet terminology
correctly. In the Performing Arts Division,
to ensure students receive the best level of instruction, the
Artistic Director assigns each student to a level and promotes
according to individual progress in strength and technique. Levels
2, 3 and 4 of the Performing Arts Division typically have one-and-a-half-hour
classes, while Level 1 is only one-hour classes.
Pointe
Three or more years of ballet training are required to begin
pointe, and then it is still left to the discretion of the Artistic
Director. Improper assignment of pointe shoes can result in permanent
damage to the feet and ankles. Each level of pointe builds upon
another, and students will be promoted according to individual
progress in strength and technique.
Jazz
Jazz requires one year of ballet experience as well as concurrent
enrollment in one ballet class a week. Classes
begin with warm up exercises to increase flexibility and strength.
Levels 3 and 4 of the Performing Arts Division typically have
one-and-a-half-hour classes, while Levels 1 and 2 are only one-hour
classes.
Tap
Tap class is fun for all ages. The footwork, beginning with simple
rhythms and sounds, quickly advances to more complex techniques.
Tap vocabulary is emphasized and styles include soft-shoe, Latin,
music theatre, jazz tap, and percussive tap.
Modern
Modern is not really "modern" at all. In fact, it has
been around since the turn of the century. Modern is usually
bound by a given expressed motif, which could be a repeated gesture,
breath or movement. Key elements in identifying this type of
dance include release, fall and suspension of movement.
